Solar Eclipse
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross the continental United States, providing an exciting and breathtaking opportunity for observation and science. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. This is the second time in a decade we have had an eclipse. The next one will be in 2044 so it is a momentous event.
The partial eclipse will begin at 1:59pm, totality will occur at 3:13pm with max at 3:15pm. The eclipse will end at 3:17pm and will return to a partial eclipse until 4:29pm. Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, (3:13-3:17) when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is NOT safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.
Therefore, students will not be going outside after 1:59pm. Classes can watch the eclipse via NASA on the Smartboard or classroom projector. Dismissal will be a concern so please talk with your child about the dangers of looking directly into the sun.
The NASA website is full of useful information in case you would like to share it with your student(s).
